Tom Cruise's 'Edge of Tomorrow' disappoints

The US box office opening for "Edge of Tomorrow" at $29.1 million shows that moviegoers may complain about a lack of originality but they do not always reward it.
Despite starring Tom Cruise, and largely positive reviews reviews, the takings were very much less than hoped for.
At number one was "The Fault in Our Stars", which took $48 million and Angelina Jolie's "Maleficent" finished second with $34.3 million in its second week.
Perhaps these had an edge because they appealed to younger views as well whereas Edge of Tomorrow appears to have attracted the over 25s.
It appears that a safe bet when spending a lot of money on a movie, is to stick to familiar characters and sequels but even sequels have to start from somewhere.
"It is becoming an absolute truism in Hollywood, that sequels rule," says Paul Degarabedian, box office analyst for Rentrak.
