The Nigerian film industry, popularly known as Nollywood, has grown to become a giant, comfortably competing with Hollywood in USA and Bollywood in India.

The industry, which began in the 1960s, is now worth billions and is the largest film industry in Africa.

Most films are produced by independent companies and investors and the market has grown from Africa to the people of African diaspora particularly in Europe and America.

Nelson Spyk, a visualiser at Icreatemedia Nelson and one of the top Nollywood producers, in an interview with OneVybe said he believes the future for the industry is promising.

The producer has previously worked on music videos, including a song for the American R'n'B boy band 112, but now he mainly works on romantic films as a producer and cinematographer.

Spyk, whose first Nollywood film was 'The Promise,' has worked on the upcoming movie 'For The Love Of Money,' which will screen at the Odeon in Greenwich on September 5, 2014.

The movie will be available for download in Europe in December.

Spyk told OneVybe that Nollywood has really come into its own and now has a distinctive style, which some may consider as 'overacting.'

He says that audiences have come to expect that and if a movie has too much of a Hollywood style, it risks being rejected.

Even though the average time for a Nollywood film to be recorded is 14 days, Spyk says he has shot films in less than 3 days, earning him the nickname 'Mr Prolific.'

A Nollywood movie can be made from as little as £6,000 up to half a million pounds for an epic.

However, Spyk conceded that there are financial challenges and fierce competition but the returns are relatively good because of technology and a growing loyal market.
