DJ Sticha on what it takes to make it as a producer
Published: 12 December 2014 | by Danny Tese
South Africa based DJ Sticha, born Keith Gift Phakathi, has achieved considerable success as a producer and entrepreneur.
On what has propelled him forward, he said: "The first tool in every situation, is to be level headed and proper
education, attend a lot of music workshops to learn from some of the
people's experiences. Some of them have been in the industry for more
than 3 decades."
The Bulawayo born musician also produces music for other artists and he told OneVybe: "Music has been my pillar of strength as a young kid.
"I've always loved joining any group or choir with the same interest in music. I then had a chance to buy my studio equipment and start my own thing in 2012."
"The first tool in every situation, is to be level headed and proper
education, attend a lot of music workshops to learn from some of the

The determined producer said: "I have faced quite a handful of challenges. Firstly there's this thing in South Africa that if you are a foreigner, you have to give your work to local producers to bear their names in exchange of airplay.
"Well I decided not to submit in SA radios, instead I play in clubs and submit to Zim radio stations of which am still working on getting my music there.
"The other thing is working mostly with people who are chasing fame as they find it difficult to stay in one place or being punctual. It becomes a problem if we land a performance gig and they are with a different group in a different club on the same day or night."
"Secondly, I've realised that in the music industry, its all about connections. Who do you know, how do you know them and stuff, on that I've simple managed to depend mostly on myself of which am doing just fine.

DJ Sticha's music has been positively received, particularly in
Pretoria. He said: "I remember this other day I went to play in a club
in Pretoria, when I got there there was a DJ who was playing, he
suddenly dropped my tune and the crowd went nuts but they didn't know it
was my song, they didn't know me at all. I heard the song was big that
side and that gave me hope and new energy.
"I've played in Sacra
awards as the main DJ, I've played along celebrity DJs in South Africa,
in and around Joburg, even in big respected events.
"My biggest highlight was to see that people love what I do and I've been getting a green pass from well known producers in SA."
"My
future plans include collaborating with some producers and artists from
all walks of life and being recognised as one of the influential young
producers.
"I also have a sound hire company named Stichtainment, we do all events from weddings, parties and church gatherings."
