The VaSikana Project had a successful event to raise awareness on the lack of funds for a majority of people to buy sanitary pads in Zimbabwe.

It can be difficult for people on low incomes such as the majority who live in the rural areas and make less than $150 a year from farming.

The project was founded by Zvisinei Dzapasi Mamutse and her sisters Lillian Dzapasi, Thandiwe Dzapasi Bepura, Olivia Dzapasi and Shingi Dzapasi Mapfumo.

The event was held on September 27th, 2014 in the US and people were are invited to bring sanitary pads along.

Zvisisnei said there was a lot of support from men and women who are willing to have events in support of VaSikana project to assist with shipping.

"There is advocation for clean safe water for all, education being made available for all," she said.

"Now women lets stand together and advocate for safe, dignified ways to manage our period for every women.

"If girls are missing school in 2014 because of their period, how then is it different from the 1970s when only boys were educated in a family?"

"Dr Trent urged women to support each other and rally together,  stating each of us has someone in our family somewhere using unsafe methods. Whether we admit it or not its a reality."
