Fashion designer Ana Lima presented key pieces from her label, Jaua, at the Africa London Fashion Week 2016. Originally from Mozambique, Ana is based in Portugal and her designs are influenced by her varied world experiences.
In an interview with OneVybe, Ana said, "One of my dreams was to participate in an international show, and to represent Mozambique at the ALFW was my opportunity. I felt very proud to participate in such a big event with great designers."
Jaua is a mixture of urban concepts that represent different cultures including muted African tones and these are perfectly blended with the aim of making the wearer feel sexy and comfortable.
The label is mostly targeted at women in their 20s and older who are
after an exclusive look. Ana said, "I feel inspired by graphics,
pinstripe combinations and African fabrics. London is a city that
inspires me a lot because I can find old and new mixed together."
Ana believes that every woman is different, with a unique body and it is
important to value that and work on producing the complementary
silhouette through custom designing, a service available from Jaua on
request.
Designing has been a lifelong passion and Ana started to design and
make her own clothes when she was fifteen years old but did not
initially choose fashion as a career. She worked in management because
she felt that it was a more secure.
However, in the end passion
won and Ana finally decided to follow her dreams saying: "Now I realise
that to be alive is more than fulfilling tasks."
With her children now grown up, Ana took the opportunity to study
fashion design at the Lisbon School of Design, sewing at Modatex and
pattern cutting at Escola de Moda de Lisboa, Magestil. Of the student
experience, Ana told OneVybe, "It was a big challenge to be in a class
with young people and being older than the teachers."
Her
determination to make her new life a success helped her power through
classes 6 days a week, including Saturdays, taking care of 3 children
and working a part time job. "There was no tiredness only motivation,"
she said.
On her work ethic, Ana admits that she gets very engrossed in
her work in order to get the best results. At times she has even
forgotten to eat and now has to set an alarm on her mobile phone when
working.
"My friends and husband are amazing, they still love and support me even when I don't have time to socialise," she said.
The hard work has borne fruit and now Ana runs Jaua and gets to enjoy
the design process and the magic of seeing her designs come to life.
Ana
told OneVybe that as a designer, one of most fulfilling moments was
when she was walking in the street, in clothes she had designed, and a
woman stopped her to ask where she had bought her clothes.
In the near future, expect to see Ana presenting Jaua at the FIL
Design, an annual event in Portugal where designers from all over the
country show their work. The event will run from the 5th to the 9th of
October 2016.
Jaua will be showcased on the runway on the 8th. She has also been invited by the African Fashion Week of Lisbon, which will be held in January 2016.
