Bestow Elan, the BEFFTA AWARD winning womenswear label, showcased their latest collection at the AFW London 2016 after being invited to take part. The designs have both a cultural and vintage eclectic in silhouettes perfect for both day and evening wear.

The designer, Erzumah Ackerson, who to date has dressed stars such as Thandie Newton, decided to indulge her passion for fashion only after she had tried other pursuits, which left her unfulfilled.

To test the waters before taking the plunge, Erzumah set up shop at Portobello Market and was encouraged by the positive response from her customers. One thing led to another and eventually a few retailers asked her to supply them. This enabled Bestow Elan to expand and develop into what it is today.

Erzumah told OneVybe that Bestow Elan designs are inspired by her 'daughter's expansive mind' and her surroundings and these range from architecture, tactile surfaces, trends from particular decades, interesting cultures, music and dance.

She told OneVybe, "Designing is the part I enjoy most of all above anything else. It gives me the scope to create and express whatever mood or shape I want to see materialise. I feel particularly honoured that the Hollywood actress Thandie Newton requested Bestow Elan for a red carpet event in LA.

"I have a few signature pieces, but I wouldn't say I have a particular look. I think people have interpreted the brand as feminine, vintage inspired and chic, so I think all those elements are prominent in our looks."

Bestow Elan do commission work, but they do not usually customise their designs beyond change of fabric choices. Currently, Bestow Elan design womenswear but a menswear range is in the pipeline.

Bestow Elan's customers are confident about who they are and are not afraid to experiment with colour and shape. "They often give me feedback that they feel unique in our clothes and get a lot of compliments," said Erzumah.

Despite her success thus far, Erzumah acknowledges that there are challenges. However, she has a positive outlook saying that the highlights always outweigh the lows. "The disappointments will keep you grounded and push you to work harder," she said.
